On March 21st master choreographer and native son of Prague Jiří Kylián is turning 70. The Holland Dance Festival, Kylián Productions and Foundation, the Zuiderstrandtheater, Korzo Theater and Productions and Nederlands Dans Theater will celebrate his birthday in style with an eclectic festival: Celebrating Kylián! Throughout the year various aspects of Kylián’s multifaceted artistry will be presented.

Jiří Kylián became world-famous in the seventies and eighties with the Nederlands Dans Theater and his neoclassical choreographies with folk motifs, strong emotional and complete virtuoso, and supple partner work. Within Kylián’s body of work various style periods can be discerned. In the nineties his vocabulary became whimsical and unruly; there were more instances of dark emotions and discontent. Gradually his dance idiom became more sober – with influences of Japanese, minimalistic esthetics – but no less complex. Each movement from Kylián seems to come from an inner emotion, in which every detail, no matter how quick and flashy, attests to a repressed tension and a complete control. Over the last years Kylián has started a cinematic and photographic research next to his work as a choreographer.

His masterpieces return to The Hague theatres
On the occasion of his seventieth birthday several productions of Kylián’s more recent work will be presented in the Korzo Theatre in March and in May, the world premiere of his film Scalamare, the poignant production East Shadow, his photographic study Free Fall, the reprise of the Holland Dance Festival production Last Touch First and the revival of the prominent NDT 3 piece Birth-Day. These productions will be accompanied by a photo exhibition of Joris Jan Bos and various film screenings.

World premiere Scalamare (film)
The idea for Scalamare started in 2015 when Kylián visited the film festival in Ancona. Italy. “I was taken to the Monumento ai caduti, the monument for the fallen. A fascist monument, but gorgeously situated on the ocean. I was fascinated by the symbolism of the place – the sea that gives and takes – and by the angle of the light on the steps, which caused me to see my own shadow disintegrate in geometric patterns. The shadow as symbol of death.” according to Jiří Kylián.

Les Ballets de Monte Carlo and Den Norske Opera Ballet in Zuiderstrandtheater
In October and November two international companies will bring a spectacular selection of major works by Jiří Kylián to the Zuiderstrandtheater. Les Ballets de Monte Carlo will perform Chapeau, among other things, homage to the former Queen Beatrix on the occasion of her 25th Jubilee and Bella Figura, one of the most successful and important works by Kylián. Den Norske Opera Ballet from Oslo will close out Celebrating Kylian! with the complete Black and White program, six works that come from the so called black-white period of the master choreographer.

NDT presents a selection from the archives
The history of Jiří Kylián is inseparable from the Nederlands Dans Theater. In the fall of 2017 there will be an exhibition in the Zuiderstrandtheater that presents a selection from the rich and for Nederlands Dans Theater defining oeuvre of Kylián.

Dancers of the future
In June 2017 the dancers of the future of the Koninklijk Conservatorium The Hague and Codarts Rotterdam will be on stage together during a montage performance with choreographies of Kylián.
